The 16-year-old, Anika Varma, at 258 is the top-ranked amateur from India on the WAGR, plays for the Granite Bay High School and has numerous accolades attached to her resume already. Anika moved to the USA for education and golf career has been performing consistently in all of her events for long now.
The latest accolade was announced by, Anika herself on Twitter, after she was contacted by the USGA team, informing about her entry in the 132-strong field, of the 120th US Women’s Amateur Championship, scheduled for Aug. 3-9 at Woodmont Country Club, Maryland.
On being asked about her entry, Anika said, “I’m excited about the opportunity and looking forward to it”, and added about the process she went through for the news, “The USGA reached out to the players based on the exemption category related to the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the top 75-ranked players as of June 24, 2020, were provided with an exemption into the championship. From there, we were asked to file an entry. Today they contacted me to inform me that I have earned an exemption into the tournament.”
Anika Varma, the player on the rise, since her top-5 finish at the Hero Women’s Indian Open, a Ladies European Tour event, in Gurugram, has now even tasted the ranks of professional golf, while travelling to Arizona on a regular basis to test her skills on the Cactus Tour, where her best finish of tied-2nd came at Sundance Golf Club event in March, this year.
