Southgate co-leads the opening round with a hole-in-one
Matthew Southgate co-leads the opening round with Paul Waring at the NBO Oman Open at 7-under 65, where Southgate fired the second hole-in-one of the season.
Al Mouj Golf is staging the first European Tour event after hosting the season ending NBO Golf Classic Grand Final for the last three seasons on the Challenge Tour.
Southgate and Waring both remained bogey-free for the round firing matching seven-under 65 for the day. Southgate posted five birdies and a magnificent hole-in-one on the par-3 5th hole, only the second of the season and Waring posted seven birdies before closing off his round with three back to back birdies on 14th, 15th, and 16th holes.
Interestingly Marcel Siem has Guy Tilson as his caddie, the twin brother of Gary Tilson, Southgate’s caddie and both had a hole in one in their rounds today. Siem made his hole-in-one from 162 yards on the seventh hole and finished his round for 2-over-par 74 for a T-97th on the board and joined by Matthias Schwab, Clement Sordet, Jamie Donaldson, Brett Rumford, Stephen Gallacher, Neil Bradley, Tapio Pulkkanen, Jens Fahrbring, Alvaros Quiros, Marcel Schneider, Thomas Alken, Ashley Chesters, and Alvaro Quiros.
“It was really good but kind of a weird way to shoot 65,” said Southgate. “I missed a few close-distance chances but then I holed two really long putts and had a hole-in-one so I think a 65 was how I played. It was a funny way to get that score but I’m over the moon with that start.
“I have Gary Tilston caddying for me, just started this week, and Guy Tilston his twin brother caddies for Marcel who also had a hole-in-one. A bit of a strange one to have two twins pick the right club for two holes-in-one in the same day – I bet that will never happen again!”
Following them by a shot for a third position on the board is Daan Huizing who produced seven birdies and a bogey in his round which did had a magic touch to it with three consecutive birdies on the 7th, 8th, and 9th holes before closing his round with birdies on 15th, 16th, and 18th holes.
Callum Shinkwin and Andy Sullivan are tied for the fourth position on the board with five-under 67 on the board.
Indians SSP Chawrasia and Shubhankar Sharma posted one-over 73 for their opening rounds for a T-77th finish on the leaderboard. Sharma is already enjoying his good run on the Tour with two wins in just four starts and the latest addition to it was at the Maybank Championship where he produced 10 birdies in his final round for the win.
They are both joined by Carlos Pigem, Bernd Ritthammer, David Horsey, Pablo Larrazabal, Mikko Ilonen, Edoardo Molinari, Pep Angles, Renato Paratore, and Chase Koepka.
